Nothing announces the start of winter quite like the UK’s favourite chorus:
‘It’s so cold.’
‘It’s freezing.’
We cling to these lines like tradition and to be fair, they prepare us perfectly for the unpredictable weather that follows.
And if there’s one thing winter loves more than freezing us, it’s proving our weather apps completely wrong…
One minute: sunshine icon.
The reality: “feels like -4.” 🥶
Or it promises “just cloudy” and you step outside into a full downpour. Typical.
So be smart about it.
Umbrella in the bag. Hooded coat. Gloves. Hand warmers. Scarves, thermals, cardigans, basically all the essentials.
If you’re looking to stock up on these winter essentials without overspending; charity shops in West Bridgford are a hidden gem.
Hydration: The Thing Everyone Forgets in Winter
When you’re cold, your body reduces your thirst signal; your brain literally stops nagging you for water. That doesn’t mean you don’t need it.
Hydration helps with focus, mood, memory, and even how well your body regulates temperature.
Use a water tracking app or just set a simple bottle goal so you’re not unintentionally going the whole day without drinking.
Your Cosy Corner
I love putting on some piano music and getting into a creative zone, whether it’s cross stitching or anything crafty.
If you want a change of scenery, The Den in Newton has everything ready for you: craft supplies, colouring wall, beanbags, games and more. Just show up.
I’m sure many of you would agree that nothing beats a hot drink, some chocolate, or a few of your favourite snacks while watching a classic movie like Home Alone on a quiet evening. Or maybe curling up with a good book is more your style. Giving your brain a little gentle stimulation now – whether through reading, a creative project, or a puzzle – helps keep it sharp, so when the next term rolls around, coming back doesn’t seem like a total slap in the face!
Take that break!
Some days, you just need a quiet moment away from everything.
Sit down, away from technology, and check in with your thoughts. Spending time with yourself like this helps you understand your own mind better and it’s all part of the journey of self-improvement.
If you want a little extra help grounding yourself, the sensory rooms in the library are perfect for a quick reset.
Winter Doesn’t Cancel Healthy Eating
Cooking feels harder for a reason: cold weather increases fatigue, lowers motivation, and shopping becomes a mission when you’re battling wind and heavy bags.
Make it easier for yourself
UberEats Grocery delivery (and yes, resist the pop-up telling you to order McDonald’s).
Check for deals on fruit, veg, and basics – what you find really depends on your local stores.
Meal kits like HelloFresh genuinely remove 90% of the stress. Exact portions, quick instructions, and no wasting ingredients. I’m on my third week and keeping every recipe card.
Small Winter Habits That Actually Work
Layers aren’t just for comfort. Staying warm reduces fatigue because your body isn’t burning extra energy trying to heat itself.
Get outside for at least 10 minutes of fresh air when you can; it helps your mood, sleep cycle, and overall energy.
Keep your sleep schedule consistent (shorter days mess with your body clock more than you realise).
Stay connected
Winter makes it really easy to isolate without noticing. Join us at the Den on Wednesday 3rd December 12-2pm for our Christmas craft event! Meet lovely people, get creative, and enjoy the festive spirit together.
But while it’s great to enjoy time with others, this is also the perfect season to slow down and spend time with yourself. Take a moment to reflect on your 2025 journey; appreciate your accomplishments, your growth, and even the challenges that shaped you. This season may be cold, but it’s also a chance to reset, reconnect, and remind yourself how far you’ve already come.
A quote for you to leave with and reflect upon:
“There is an instinctive withdrawal for the sake of preservation, a closure that assumes the order of completion. Winter is a season unto itself.” ~ Haruki Murakami
