What is Harm Reduction?
You’ve probably heard people say, “Don’t do drugs.” But let’s be honest—that advice isn’t always helpful. The reality is, lots of people use drugs at different points in their lives.
At The Place, we believe that if you’re going to use drugs, it’s important to have all the facts. Knowing what you’re using, how to use it safely, and understanding the risks can help you make informed choices. Plus, it means you’ll be better prepared to look after yourself if something doesn’t go as planned—or to know where to get help.
This approach is called harm reduction. By giving you the right information, we aim to help you stay as safe as possible when it comes to drugs and alcohol.
General Harm Reduction Tips
While each drug has specific risks and advice, these general tips can help you stay safer:
Do your research
Every drug has different effects, risks, and ways to use it safely. Make sure you understand the substance you’re planning to use so you know what to expect and the safest way to take it.
Start low, go slow
Drugs can be stronger than expected, and your tolerance can vary. Start with a small amount and wait to see how you feel—you don’t want it to hit harder than you’re ready for and ruin your night.
Don’t mix drugs (including alcohol)
Mixing substances can have unpredictable effects and put extra strain on your body. It’s safer to stick to one drug at a time.
Remember to be hygienic
Don’t share equipment. Use your own clean gear (for example, a personal straw instead of a shared banknote for powdered substances). This helps reduce the spread of infections and diseases.
Don’t use alone
Always have someone you trust with you when using drugs. They can help if something goes wrong.
Check in with your mood
If you’re feeling down or anxious, using drugs might make things worse. Wait until you’re in a good headspace to avoid amplifying negative feelings.
If you need advice or support about drugs, alcohol, or staying safe on a night out, we’re here for you. Our services are free, confidential, and judgment-free—we’re here to help, not to tell you what to do.
